I installed a Bosch DVR-440 Advantage line Digital Video Recorder at a customer’s factory. The customer had requested that he be able to log onto the DVR and view live streaming of the Cameras. This request is fairly simple you just need to set up port forwarding through the router, network the DVR then install the I Phone app etc. I set it up and ensured he could view the cameras, after this I was looking through the menu system on the DVR and noticed potential functionality that may benefit the customer.
I set up the DVR to send emails and performed successful email tests to my email account, after this I set up the cameras for motion detection with a function that allows an email to be sent when a camera detects motion. I then tested this functionality, to my surprise not only did I receive the email but also an attachment of the motion video clip. What a cool function!
I discussed my findings with the customer. I set up a time schedule that limits motion detection to specific times and intern the email being sent. The customer is extremely happy with his purchase which happens to be at the cheaper end of Bosch’s CCTV product range.

It never seems to amaze me how many customers don’t want alarm monitoring even after I have stated the obvious benefits, in reality an alarm system without some form of monitoring is just an annoyance to individuals who reside in the immediate area that the alarm system is located. At most the siren goes off for 5 minutes which is plentiful time for a criminal to get in and disable the system and have their way with your property. The individuals in the immediate vicinity are glad to hear the end to the siren and go on with there life while your house is ransacked.
There are a lot of forms of monitoring even if you don’t wont to pay for 24/7 Back to Base monitoring fees you can at the very least set the alarm panel up to dial your mobile phone, this configuration won’t tell you what security device has gone into alarm but it will notify you of the issue.
There are alarm system panels produced now that have a TXT module in them and can send a TXT on alarm to your mobile phone which will inform you the device that has gone into alarm so my advice is any form of monitoring is better than no monitoring at all.

1. Where is the alarm system panel going to be located
Considerations: The panel should be located in a location that is covered by a movement detector. It shouldn’t be located in a location that is to hot “in ceiling” or to moist “under floor”.
2. Where is the keypad going to be located
Considerations: Usually the keypad is located at the entry path into the premises and is covered by an entry detector that will trigger the entry timer, although this function can be performed by a reed switch on the entry door as well. If your alarm system has key fobs “remote controls” to arm and disarm the alarm system, you may want to install the keypad inside your bedroom door to act as a stay arming station for perimeter protection. But in general the most import consideration when deciding where to install the keypad is to make sure that detectors that aren’t entry/ exit types won’t detect you before the assigned entry /exit detector does on your path to the keypad.
3. Are you going to have Home invasion perimeter protection?
Considerations: Generally perimeter protection involves reed switches on all perimeter doors and windows with glass break detectors on all windows and some form of stay arming system a good method for this is to have a night arming station that has a single button arm / disarm and a led light that reflects the state of the Stay area. The specific makeup of the individuals that reside in the house will determine where this night arming station is located. Say if the system was for an elderly couple it may be located inside their bedroom door for a family with children it may reside in a central location that is visible to all inhabitants on departure from their bedroom.
4. Where to locate detectors
Considerations: In general detectors should not be installed in a position that is looking at windows, it is best practise to have them pointing into the building. Careful consideration should be placed on the direction they are pointing, any form of potential mechanical or heat movement should be considered, to give an example of this is the placement of a detector that is directed towards the kitchen. You have just loaded the dishwasher and set the cycle then armed the alarm system and left the house, the dishwasher heats up and the hot air raises the Passive infrared detector picks this heat movement up and goes into alarm setting of the system causing a false alarm. Other things to consider are the location of valuable items and safes at the property these locations should be covered by movement detectors. I would also consider in ceiling detectors particularly if you have a tiled ceiling these should be a type for harsh environments to reduce false alarms and finally carful consideration of detector placement with regard to the premises entry /exit path.
5. Where to locate Sirens and Strobe.
Considerations: In general the outdoor siren and strobe box should be placed at the front entrance to the property. This will give the Siren the best chance to make a statement for 5 minutes when there is an alarm. The strobe will continue flashing until the system is disarmed and should be located in easy view of the driveway so when you get home you will see it and know that there is an alarm with the possibility that a thief is still in your house. The internal siren is usually placed in a central location where it will irritate an intruder as much as possible.

An increasing number of customers are requesting a Wireless Alarm or Camera system be installed in there premises. When they first contact me they believe that Wireless Systems are some how better than wired systems. Personally I only advise to install wireless devices where it is impossible to fit cabling to the device an example of this is a location such as the ground floor of a two story house. Below is an outline of the advantages and disadvantages of the wired and wireless security platforms.
Positives
1. Security devices such as Passive Infrared Detectors, Reed Switches, and Cameras etc are generally cheaper to Purchase.
2. Security devices are directly connected to the system with cable and are powered by the system this gives a more reliable platform for device monitoring.
Negatives
1. Installation cost of cabling
Positives
1. Installation cost due to no cabling having to be installed
Negatives
1. Devices are generally more expensive
2. Security devices are powered by batteries; this creates more maintenance cost and less system reliability if the battery power supply should fail.
3. Although Unlikely but due to the nature of the wireless platform it is more acceptable to hacking.
4. Increased risk of the system control panel not receiving a notification of an alarm happening due to a foreign frequency, Intentional “jamming” or unintentional “Interference” coming from another source interfering with the wireless transmission between security device and system control panel.
On assessment of these results it can be clearly stated that a wireless system should only be considered where cabling can’t be installed

In general Digital Television reception in Bowral is quite good.
There are some black spots, some that come to mind, is a hollow situated in East Bowral around Alice Avenue, on Bowral Street near Mittagong Creek and Phillip Street at Burradoo.
The main problem with reception at other locations is the trees. I find the reception can change annually when the annual trees get their new growth which can affect the strength of the Digital signal path to your aerial.
The good thing about reception in the Southern Highlands is we have two TV towers to choose from and I always find that you can get reception from at least one of them, that’s why it is so important to survey with a Digital Field Strength Meter at the Antenna to ensure your aerial is pointing in the right direction.

Integrated Home Security involves an electronic Interface between the different systems in a security system . It allows for bi directional information to flow between the Alarm System, Intercom System and CCTV System. One of the main benefits to be gained by integrated Security is to control the systems off site, an example of this is
You’re not at home and a delivery man pushes the intercom button at your front gate, this triggers a txt message from the alarm panel to you. You open an App on your iphone and talk to the delivery man while viewing the Intercom camera. You then open the front gate and garage door through your phone so he can deliver the parcel for you while you watch the process through your Surveillance Camera System.

When considering what kind of movement detectors to purchase for your alarm system, you need to keep an important reality in mind. This is - “An alarm system that false alarms causes reduced security."
Simply put, whether the alarm system is monitored by back to base monitoring, dials your mobile to report alarms, or is stand alone “just noisy," false alarms cause a sense of unreliability in the system, which could cause an individual's response to alarms to be less virulent.
An example of this would be - you have a stand alone system - “ no monitoring”. This system false alarms regularly. Your neighbours know your phone number, but ignore the alarm the day your house really gets burgled, because they ask themselves the question, "Are you being burgled? No, it’s just another false alarm!"
