Protect what’s Important

  • Security Systems Wired Vs Wireless

An increasing number of customers are requesting a Wireless Alarm or Camera system be installed in there premises. When they first contact me they believe that Wireless Systems are some how better than wired systems. Personally I only advise to install wireless devices where it is impossible to fit cabling to the device an example of this is a location such as the ground floor of a two story house. Below is an outline of the advantages and disadvantages of the wired and wireless security platforms.

    Wired

    Positives

    1. Security devices such as Passive Infrared Detectors, Reed Switches, and Cameras etc are generally cheaper to Purchase.

    2. Security devices are directly connected to the system with cable and are powered by the system this gives a more reliable platform for device monitoring.

    Negatives

    1. Installation cost of cabling

    Wireless

    Positives

    1. Installation cost due to no cabling having to be installed

    Negatives

    1. Devices are generally more expensive

    2. Security devices are powered by batteries; this creates more maintenance cost and less system reliability if the battery power supply should fail.

    3. Although Unlikely but due to the nature of the wireless platform it is more acceptable to hacking.

    4. Increased risk of the system control panel not receiving a notification of an alarm happening due to a foreign frequency, Intentional “jamming” or unintentional “Interference” coming from another source interfering with the wireless transmission between security device and system control panel.

On assessment of these results it can be clearly stated that a wireless system should only be considered where cabling can’t be installed
